What is
Chinese New Year? I don’t really understand it that much. My name is Bryant
Tan. My parents passed away when I was 2 due to a road accident. Therefore, I
was sent to an orphanage because no one wanted to accept me to their families
even though they are my relatives. I told myself that I could create a family
of my own at the orphanage. When I was
12, I had 3 sisters and 4 brothers. My 2 sisters were Chinese and another was a
Malay girl. She was the leader of our room. My 2 brothers were Indian and the other
2 was Chinese. We were all closed and one day I suggested to them to be my brother
and sisters. They agreed and from there a family was created.
Every Chinese New Year, we were given a
feast on ‘Chinese New Year Eve’, ‘1st day and the last day of ‘Chinese
New Year’. The feast we get are like Sushi, KFC,Pizza Hut and sometimes Domino.
All of the children who lived in the orphanage were given a chance to eat this
type of food when there is a celebration of a race. The feast was shared among
everyone in the society no matter you are an Indian, Chinese or Malay. The
funds we get to eat these type of food was the money that was donated by
schools, companies, NGO and other societies that are willing to help us. We
were all thankful for their help and in return we made handcraft stuff to appreciate
their help for us.
One day in school, I heard my
friend talking about ‘ Ang Pau’. I went towards them and asked them, “What is
Ang Pau?”. “ Say what? You don’t know what Ang Pau is?” Jonus said with his bug
eye. I shake my head left and right to tell him ‘No’. “Oops! I forgot that you
have no mommy and daddy to give you Ang Pau.” Jonus replied. “What is it?
Please tell me?” I insisted on getting the answer. “ Ang Pau is something that
people give u a red packet which filled up with bad luck inside. When you were
about to receive it, run away or else you will be haunted by the bad luck for 5
months!” Jonus explained. “ Really?” I asked with my wild eyes. :” Yup!” Jonus answered
and I left from the scene.
When it was the last subject of the
day, Mr.Eng my Bahasa Malayisa teacher told me to stay back for a minutes once
the last school bell rang. When the last bell rung, Mr. Eng asked me to approach
forward to him and I did. He gave me a ‘Red packet’ and I was frozen for a moment
to receive it. I suddenly remember what my friend said about it and try to make
a run but I could not as I must show my respect to my teachers. “ Sir, I can’t
take it!” I refused to take the red packet on his hands. “Why?”, Mr Eng asked
curiously. “Because my friend told me just now that Ang Pau has bad luck in it.”
I replied. “Bryant! Red packets are filled up with money inside. The friends
who told you earlier are talking craps which makes you only want to refuse the ‘Red
packet’ people are giving you,” Mr.Eng explained. “ My friend fooled me!” I muttered.
“ Take it and Happy Chinese New Year,” Me Eng greeted me and I greeted him
back.
When I got back to my orphanage,
I shared the awkward story I had in sschool with my brothers and sisters. They were
all surprised to see the ‘Red Packet’ I have on my hands. My brothers and
sisters look jealous but I told them that we are able to spend it on ‘Ice-cream’
and they were all on cloud nine.
The ninth day of Chinese New Year
when I met one of my caretaker, I asked her, “Why don’t any of us receive ‘Red
packet’?” .She replied, “ Because we don’t have much money to give each and one
of you but instead we used up that money to give you all a feast which makes
everyone on cloud nine!”. “ Oh!” I said and we both waved goodbye and went to
bed.
20 years later when I got my job, I
had so much friends in the adult world compared to the friends I had when I was
a kid. I am able to still keep in touch with my brothers and sister through
Facebook. Every year during Chinese New Year, I will visit them and also the
people who I met throughout my path. I even went back to my own orphanage and
took them out in a bus that I hired. We travel around Penang and visited places
like ‘World War 2 Museum’, ‘Butterfly farm’ and many more. The kids and teenagers enjoyed the trip and I
promise to do it with them every year when I am around
Coming back to my question, ‘What is Chinese
New Year?’. I found the answer after 20 years. Based on my opinion, Chinese New
Year isn’t about collecting money but it is about to reunite everyone who were
once closed but then when they got their job, they have to stay far away from
each other. We seldom see our relatives and therefore, Chinese New Year was created
by our ancestor to reunite everyone back together with happiness. Furthermore, Chinese New Year is a great way
where we were able to share their stories with one another about what we experience
during our past years and we might actually learn something from there when
people comment on our stories that we had experience. To maintain the bond that
the Chinese have, reunion dinner and Chinese New Year is the solution for them
to do so. We sometimes might quarrel with one another and the only way for us
to meet again and forgive one another is through Chinese New Year. Life is
short though therefore, spend every precious time you have with your relatives
that you only get too see them once a year because we will never know when they
will depart from earth. Besides that, we
all could feel that when Chinese New Year is here, all of us could feel that love
is in the air flying from one person heart to another. Happy Chinese New year
people and I love you all J
